INVOCATION AND OPENING WORDS
In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God the Father we’re familiar with. We often pray – “Our Father…” Of course, we know God the Son, Jesus. It seems like everyone has heard of the manger, the cross and the empty tomb. In fact, we’re so familiar with Jesus and what he did for us that we treat the good news almost – dare I say? – as boring. God the Holy Spirit we don’t know so much about. And yet, our life from beginning to end depends on the Holy Spirit. Our life as a Christian is not a do-it-yourself project. It’s the Holy Spirit that connects us to Jesus through faith in him. It’s the Holy Spirit that makes us alive spiritually and opens our eyes to see our sins, as well as, our Savior. It’s at the nudging of the Holy Spirit that we get honest and real with ourselves and one another – as we gather in prayer at the cross right now.
Holy Spirit, you have given us new life through faith in Jesus. It’s 100% your work in us. We confess this morning that we have at times neglected our salvation. We have grieved you in our sinful thoughts, words, and actions. Each of us has a sinful nature that is constantly fighting you. Instead of going in the direction you want, we choose to go in our own direction. Forgive us this and all of our sins for the sake of Jesus, our Savior. Because your Word and the food at the Lord’s Table are the tools you use, keep us from neglecting these so that you might continue your work in us. Amen.
It’s not because we’re so smart that we know all this. It’s because the Holy Spirit has taught us. The Spirit never draws attention to himself, but to Jesus. On account of Jesus, our sins are forgiven!
HYMN … (Hymnal #913)
O Holy Spirit, enter in, And in our hearts Your work begin, Your dwelling place now make us. Sun of the soul, O Light divine, Around and in us brightly shine, To joy and gladness wake us That we may be Truly living, To You giving Prayer unceasing And in love be still increasing.
Give to Your Word impressive pow’r, That in our hearts from this good hour As fire it may be glowing, That in true Christian unity We faithful witnesses may be, Your glory ever showing. Hear us, cheer us By Your teaching; Let our preaching And our labor Praise You, Lord, and serve our neighbor.
O mighty Rock, O Source of life, Let Your dear Word in doubt and strife, In us be strongly burning That we be faithful unto death And live in love and holy faith, From You true wisdom learning. Your grace and peace On us shower; By your power Christ confessing, Let us see our Savior’s blessing.

HYMN … (Hymnal #646)
Church of God, elect and glorious, Holy nation, chosen race; Called as God’s own special people, Royal priests and heirs of grace: Know the purpose of your calling, Show to all His mighty deeds; Tell of love that knows no limits, Grace that meets all human needs.
God has called you out of darkness Into His most marv’lous light; Brought His truth to life within you, Turned your blindness into sight, Let your light so shine around you That God’s name is glorified And all find fresh hope and purpose In Christ Jesus crucified.
Once you were an alien people, Strangers to God’s heart of love; But He brought you home in mercy, Citizens of heav’n above. Let His love flow out to others, Let them feel a Father’s care; That they too may know His welcome and His countless blessings share.
HYMN … (Hymnal #646)
Church of God, elect and holy, Be the people He intends; Strong in faith and swift to answer Each command your Master sends: Royal priests, fulfill your calling Through your sacrifice and prayer; Give your lives in joyful service—Sing His praise, His love declare.
P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
