SERIES: THE GOSPEL OF JOHN – 16

A Simple Outline of Worship for April 26, 2020

INVOCATION AND OPENING WORDS

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

What is macaroni and cheese without the cheese? What is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the bread? These ingredients are essential. That’s the point Jesus is making in John chapter 6 when he calls himself the “bread of life”. Jesus is essential to life. Jesus isn’t something extra you add to your life – as if you could live without him. Without Jesus there is no life. Of course, you’re alive physically. But God made you body and soul. He made us for a relationship with him and to live with him. Sin left us spiritually dead – dead to God and destined for eternal death – eternally separated from God. We need Jesus because he is life. Let’s pray.

I have been guilty, Jesus, of running from day to day without giving you much thought. I have not always considered you essential. Instead, I have been consumed by so many other lesser things. I have allowed good things – even important things – to take over my schedule, my attention, and my heart. There are times that I have also allowed wrong and evil things to take up space in my heart and life that don’t belong there. Forgive me for these and all of my sins. Cause my life to revolve around you. Make yourself more important than anyone or anything else in my life. Help me to realize that my restless appetite can only be satisfied by you. Amen.

Jesus offers and gives you forgiveness for your every sin. He, and only he, can do that because he paid the penalty for your sins. With no disrespect intended, let me add that since you are what you eat, may you become more and more like Jesus who is the Bread of life.

HYMN … (Hymnal #821)

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; His the scepter, His the throne; Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion Thunder like a mighty flood: “Jesus out of ev’ry nation Has redeemed us by His blood.”

Reading from the Life and Ministry of Jesus … John 6:22-59

(Jesus is the Bread of life)

HYMN … (Hymnal #821)

Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us; Faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received Him When the forty days were o’er, Shall our hearts forget His promise: “I am with you evermore”?

Alleluia! Bread of heaven, Here on earth our food, our stay; Alleluia! Here the sinful Flee to You from day to day. Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth’s Redeemer, hear our plea Where the songs of all the sinless Sweep across the crystal sea.

Sermon: “Bread”

HYMN … (Hymnal #918)

Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou are mighty; Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand. Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Feed me till I want no more.

PRAYERS

LORD'S PRAYER

Matthew 6:9-13

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
