A Simple Outline of Worship for April 19, 2020

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A little toy plastic lawn mower is fun for a little boy to play with and cute to watch. But how useless and ridiculous it would be for a grown man to pull out that same toy plastic lawn mower to cut real grass. We might laugh at the idea. But how many people try using a childish, immature faith to deal with grown-up problems in a real world. What we need is a mature faith. A faith that is built on something solid and reliable. God is working such a faith in us. The object of our faith – the One in whom we put our faith – is Jesus our Savior. He will never let us down. Let us pray…

Loving Savior and Lord, we turn to you because there is no where else for us to turn. There is no one else who can forgive sins and rescue us from all our enemies. You alone are God, but we confess that we have played God – acting as if we can handle things on our own – thinking that we know better than you – doubting your promises – becoming worried and afraid. Forgive our sins and our foolishness. Hold onto us with your strong grip. Give us the strength to hold onto you for dear life because you will never let us down – here or in eternity. Amen.

There is no other Savior. Our sins are forgiven on account of his cross and empty tomb. Jesus alone overcame sin, death, and hell. In him, we are secure here and for eternity.

HYMN … (Hymnal #575)

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; No merit of my own I claim But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

REFRAIN On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

Old Testament Reading … Job 38:1-11

(God is the almighty Creator who is in charge of all creation)

Reading from the Life and Ministry of Jesus … John 6:16-21

(Jesus walks on water)

HYMN … (Hymnal #575)

When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.

REFRAIN On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, His covenant and blood Support me in the raging flood; When ev’ry earthly prop gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

REFRAIN On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

Sermon: “Fear”

HYMN … (Hymnal #656)

A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; he helps us free from ev’ry need That hath us now o’er-taken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of Sabaoth Lord, And there’s none other God; He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill; They shall not overpow’r us. This world’s prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none. He’s judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him.

The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He’s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict’ry has been won; the Kingdom ours remaineth.

Matthew 6:9-13

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.
