INVOCATION AND OPENING WORDS
In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Something that has always boggled my mind is the idea of starving of thirst on a boat in the middle of the ocean. There you are surrounded by all that water. But you can’t drink it. If you do, you’ll die. That’s because it’s salt water. Looks can be deceiving. It reminds me of Jesus inviting thirsty people to come to him for living water. Outwardly religious people, rotten criminals and everyone in between are starving of thirst in the middle of the ocean of the world. That’s because Jesus alone is the source of life-giving water. People can appear to be surrounded by “everything” but still be missing the one thing essential, namely Jesus. Looks can be deceiving. Let’s pray.
Life-giving Savior, we are surrounded by so much, and yet without you, we are as good as dead. We have thirsted after so much that looks good – sounds good – and feels good – but is not good. We have been deceived by the devil, the world, and our own sinful nature. Rescue us from our sin and guilt. Rescue us from this ocean of death and fill us with life by the power of the Holy Spirit. Turn our eyes and hearts on the thirsty world around us so that we might offer them life-giving water. Amen.
Your sins have been paid for and your guilt has been removed because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Forgiveness and life are yours by the power of the Holy Spirit who has worked in you faith to believe in Jesus.
HYMN … (Hymnal #650)
Holy Spirit, ever dwelling In the holiest realms of light; Holy Spirit, ever brooding O’er a world of gloom of night; Holy Spirit, ever raising Those of earth to thrones on high; Living, life-imparting Spirit, You we praise and magnify.
Reading from the New Testament… Revelation 22:17
(Invitation to the thirsty)
Reading from the Life and Ministry of Jesus … John 7:25-39
(If anyone is thirsty…)
HYMN … (Hymnal #496)
Holy Spirit, light divine, Shine upon this heart of mine; Chase the shades of night away, Turn the darkness into day.
Let me see my Savior’s face, Let me all His beauties trace; Show those glorious truths to me Which are only known to Thee.
Holy Spirit, pow’r divine, Cleanse this guilty heart of mine; In Thy mercy pity me, From sin’s bondage set me free.
Holy Spirit, joy divine, Cheer this saddened heart of mine; Yield a sacred, settled peace, Let it grow and still increase.
HYMN … (Hymnal #496)
Holy Spirit, all divine, Dwell within this heart of mine; Cast down every idol throne, Reign supreme, and reign alone.
P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
