To Seek and To Save

A Series of Services for Lent and Holy Week

A Simple Outline of Worship for Easter – April 12, 2020

Easter: You Will See Him

He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Matthew 28:7

INVOCATION AND OPENING WORDS

P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P Christ is risen!

C He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

We have a God who came to seek and to save the lost. That is good news! Good news, that is, only if we understand what it means to be lost. To be lost in the Bible means to be lost from God – separated from him because of sin. And we would remain separated from him forever unless Jesus came to save us. Jesus stepped into our shoes and lived a perfect life for us which we could never do. And then he died as payment for our sins. Jesus rose from the dead because he doesn’t just give life – he IS life. Through faith in him, we are no longer lost, but found. We have much to celebrate today! Let’s pray…

Crucified and risen Savior, today we celebrate that you have overcome sin and death! You didn’t need saving, we did. Out of your great love, you came to save us. We have failed to love you with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength – and our neighbor as ourselves. Our sins deserve your punishment – now and forever. But instead you offer us forgiveness.

Forgive us according to your unfailing love and promise. Fill us with your love so that we turn away from a life of death and live the new life that you have given us. Amen.

God has redeemed you through his Son, Jesus. No sin is too great. No number of sins is too many. No one is so lost that God can’t find. Having confessed your sins, receive God’s gift of forgiveness purchased with the blood of Jesus on the cross.

HYMN … (Hymnal #457)

Jesus Christ is ris’n today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heav’nly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky he’s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Old Testament Reading … Isaiah 25:6-9

(God will defeat death forever and wipe away tears!)

New Testament Reading … 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 54-58

(God has written resurrection and eternal life into our stories!)

Reading from the Life and Ministry of Jesus … Matthew 28:1-10

(Jesus’ resurrection from the eyewitnesses.)

HYMN … (Hymnal #457)

Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia! Praise him, all ye heav’nly host, Alleluia! Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

Sermon: “You Will See Him”

HYMN … (Hymnal #461)

I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, he lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living head.

He lives triumphant from the grave; He lives eternally to save; He lives all glorious in the sky; He lives exalted there on high.

He lives, my kind, wise, heav’nly friend; He lives and loves me to the end; He lives, and while he lives, I’ll sing; He lives, my Prophet, Priest and King.

He lives and grants me daily breath; He lives, and I shall conquer death; He lives my mansion to prepare; He lives to bring me safely there.

He lives, all glory to his name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same; Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives: I know that my Redeemer lives!

PRAYERS

LORD'S PRAYER

Matthew 6:9-13

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

EASTER GREETING

P Christ is risen!

C He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
