SERIES: THE GOSPEL OF JOHN – 18

A Simple Outline of Worship for May 10, 2020

INVOCATION AND OPENING WORDS

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

We’ve all had the experience of getting started on some project – whether it’s baking or wiring a three-way switch in our home – and finding out that we don’t know what we’re doing. In those moments, we usually stop and need to check the instructions. Sometimes getting it wrong can lead to disaster. That’s certainly true with Jesus. People can be all wrong about Jesus if they rely on their own ideas, their emotions – how they feel about Jesus, or the opinions of others. The only way to know the truth about Jesus is through his Word. His Word is more than just some ink on paper – like any other book. His Word is alive and active and powerful. It has the power to transform and to create saving faith in Jesus. Let’s pray.

Jesus, we come to you wanting to know you better. We confess that we have sometimes been guilty of misjudging you, your love, your power, your intentions… because we have relied on our own thoughts and emotions or the opinions of others rather than your Word. We have sinned in our misjudgment of you and in our thoughts, words, and actions. Let us hear your Word of promise to forgive our sins. Lead us to trust in you for who are – our Creator and Redeemer – and everything your Word says you are. Don’t let us keep you to ourselves, but instead share the truth of who you are with others. Amen.

Having confessed your sins, trust God’s Word that assures you Jesus has paid for your every sin. That forgiveness is yours through faith in Jesus Christ.

HYMN … (Hymnal #819)

Sing praise to God, the highest good, The author of creation, The God of love who understood Our need for His salvation. With healing balm our souls He fills And ev’ry faithless murmur stills: To God all praise and glory!

We sought the Lord in our distress; O God, in mercy hear us. Our Savior saw our helplessness And came with peace to cheer us. For this we thank and praise the Lord, Who is by one and all adored: To God all praise and glory!

He never shall forsake His flock, His chosen generation; He is their refuge and their rock, Their peace and their salvation. As with a mother’s tender hand, He leads His own, His chosen band: To God all praise and glory!

Reading from the Old Testament… Joshua 24:14-18

(Choose whom you will serve)

Reading from the Life and Ministry of Jesus … John 7:1-24

(The person of Jesus requires a response)

HYMN … (Hymnal #862)

Oh, blest the house, whate’er befall, Where Jesus Christ is all in all! A home that is not wholly His—How sad and poor and dark it is!

Oh, blest that house where faith is found And all in hope and love abound; They trust their God and serve Him still And do in all His holy will!

Oh, blest the parents who give heed Unto their children’s foremost need And weary not of care of cost. May none to them and heav’n be lost!

Oh, blest that house; it prospers will. In peace and joy the parents dwell, And in their children’s lives is shown How richly God can bless His own.

Sermon: “Judge”

HYMN … (Hymnal #862)

Then here will I and mine today A solemn promise make and say: Though all the world forsake His Word, I and my house will serve the Lord!

PRAYERS

LORD'S PRAYER

Matthew 6:9-13

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
