A Simple Outline of Worship for May 3, 2020

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

There’s one word that no one likes to hear. It’s the word “no”. No, you can’t have that. No, you can’t do that. We’ve been hearing the word “no” more often in the midst of the coronavirus restrictions. No to getting your hair cut. No to going to the movies. No to even going to the dentist. Okay, so maybe it’s not all bad. But it’s not easy to deal with no, especially for sinful and rebellious-natured people like us. We resist authority. We want to do what we want to do. We like to say “yes” to our favorite person – me. That’s especially bad when we say yes to harmful things. But even too much of a good thing can be bad. This is a side of us that isn’t very pretty – even to ourselves. It’s especially ugly to God who is holy. Rather than casting us away from himself, he sent Jesus to save us so that we could be with him. Let’s pray.

Holy God, you see everything we do and hear everything we say. You even know our secret thoughts. You know how often we have said no to what you have commanded and how many times we have said yes to what you have forbidden. We are guilty and deserve your punishment, here and for eternity. But we pray that you would not treat us as our sins deserve. Instead, for the sake of Jesus, show us your wholly undeserved and unconditional love. Forgive our every sin. Mold our wills to conform to your will so that we say yes to you and no to our sinful nature. Amen.

Having confessed your sins, trust that God has said yes to removing your sins from you. In Christ, you are forgiven.

HYMN … (Hymnal #814)

O bless the Lord, my soul! Let all within me join And aid my tongue to bless His name Whose favors are divine.

‘Tis He forgives thy sins; ‘Tis He relieves thy pain; ‘Tis He that heals thy sicknesses And makes thee young again.

He crowns thy life with love When ransomed from the grave; He that redeemed my soul from hell Hath sov’reign pow’r to save.

Reading from the New Testament… Romans 10:9-13

(Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved)

Reading from the Life and Ministry of Jesus … John 6:60-71

(Many disciples desert Jesus)

HYMN … (Hymnal #571)

God loved the world so that He gave His only Son the lost to save, That all who would in Him believe Should everlasting life receive.

Sermon: “Life”

HYMN … (Hymnal #571)

God would not have the sinner die; His Son with saving grace is nigh; His Spirit in the Word declares How we in Christ are heaven’s heirs.

Matthew 6:9-13

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
